Baar/Madeira - Swiss shipping company Scylla and EUROMAR, the agency of the International Shipping Register of Madeira, have agreed to capitalize together on the Douro River’s growing tourism industry. Under the agreement, Scylla will make Madeira its home port for two vessels, a fleet that officials expect to increase in the future.

The Portuguese archipelago of Madeira will be the home port of the shipping company Scylla headquartered in Baar in the canton of Zug under an agreement with EUROMAR, the agency of the International Shipping Register of Madeira.

Madeira will become the embarkation point for all Scylla ships plying the Douro River on the Iberian peninsula, according to a LinkedIn post from Scylla. The Scylla ships will fly the Portuguese flag.

A new company within the Madeira International Business Centre in the region’s capital of Funchal will manage the new venture. A new ship, the Merchant Ship Porto Mirante, will be joining another Scylla boat, the Merchant Ship Andorinha, in May. Other vessels are expected to join the fleet in the future as more American, British, and European tourists are expected to seek to travel on the Douro.

“This confirms the register’s intention to grow in inland shipping, resulting in a diversified fleet with modern vessels,” said EUROMAR Managing Director Albrecht Gundermann in an interview with Travel Trade, a news magazine. “Scylla’s commitment to Portugal is also excellent news for visitors wishing to explore Portugal. A growing cruise fleet will create direct added value for the local shipping industry and create quality jobs on both the Douro and in Madeira.”  ce/jd
