Frick - Carbon Standards International (CSI) is launching the Global Biochar C-Sink standard as a successor to the EBC C-Sink. This creates the scientific framework conditions for the manufacturing and certification of geological and temporary carbon sinks.

Carbon Standards International AG (CSI) has presented the Global Biochar C-Sink. As detailed in a press release issued by the company, a specialist in standards and system solutions for climate-positive agriculture, forestry and industry based in Frick in the canton of Aargau, Switzerland, the new, innovative standard for negative emissions based on biochar replaces the EBC C-Sink, which was published in 2020.

At that time, it was not only the first certification standard for biochar C-Sinks, but also for all long-term geological carbon sinks, as the company writes in the press release. Since then, hundreds of biochar producers have certified their biochar C-Sinks in accordance with the EBC. After several minor updates to the standard for carbon reservoirs, the time eventually came for a more comprehensive revision, which has now resulted in the new Global Biochar C-Sink Standard.

The Global Biochar C-Sink creates the scientific framework conditions for the manufacturing and certification of geological and temporary carbon sinks. The core carbon accounting principles of the EBC C-Sink have been retained in the new standard, while the scientific basis was further strengthened.

“Global Biochar C-Sink is based on certified biochar and the World Biochar Certificate Standard is applied worldwide”, comments Lucia Brusegan, President of the North American International Biochar Initiative (IBI). She adds: “This is essential to ensure the safety and reliability of biochar production and use, especially for soil health”. A cooperation agreement between CSI and IBI was recently signed. ce/gba
