Brussels - The EU-India Trade and Technology Council Working Group 2, or WG2, has announced the winners of a matchmaking event for electric vehicle, or EV, battery recycling technologies. The initiative aims to draw connections between fast-growing markets in India and the EU.

WG2 officials chose four Indian startups and four European startups, according to a July 16 European Commission press release. Each will receive free trips to the European Union and India for week-long “market immersion” visits.

These visits could yield important partnerships in two of the world’s fast-growing electric vehicle battery markets. India’s lithium-ion battery market is worth around €52.1 million now but is projected to grow to €1.4 billion by 2030. The EU’s market, worth around €18.1 billion in 2022, is projected to grow to around € 86.8 billion by 2032.

The Indian winners were BatX Energies, which uses hydro and electric technology to recycle lithium-ion batteries; Evergreen Lithium Recycling Private Limited, which extracts critical metals from lithium-ion batteries; LW3 Pvt. Ltd, a company that uses blockchain to track batteries; and Lohum, India’s largest sustainable energy transition materials producer.

The European startups were Ecomet Refining, an Italian company that recovers raw materials from electronic waste; Poland’s Eneris, a specialist in end-of-life battery waste management; German firm Tozero, which reintegrates battery waste in supply chains; German battery recycler Primobius.

“Bravo Winners!!” wrote Leena Pishe Thomas, Director and Principal Consultant at Bangalore-based Global Business Inroads, which manages international technology, innovation, and education-related business and research projects, in a July 18 LinkedIn post.

Thomas noted that the Indian start-ups would journey to the EU to explore business, partnership, project, and investment opportunities in September while European startups would visit India in October with the same goals. ce/jd
